Do you need an agent—or just automation?

“Agent” is fashionable. Many tasks still need a boring workflow: when X happens, do Y, stop if Z is missing.

Two different machines

Automation (Zapier-style triggers and actions, Make scenarios) moves structured data between tools on known paths. Zapier describes workflows through triggers and actions; Make describes connected modules that transform data.

An agent uses tools more flexibly: reading ambiguous input, browsing, writing files, deciding next steps. Computer-using agents (including products like coding agents or desktop agents) can take actions a person could take on a computer. That flexibility needs tighter review.

If your process fits “when this form arrives, create this row and notify this channel,” start with automation. Add an agent only where judgment or messy input is the bottleneck—and keep irreversible actions behind approval.

Design the approval boundary

Whether you use Zapier, Make, Cursor, Grok Bot or another agent product:

  1. Separate draft from send.
  2. Log inputs and outputs.
  3. Define duplicate and empty-field behaviour.
  4. Name who can pause the system.

OpenClaw, Hermes-style agents, and similar tools are useful labels for “computer-using helpers,” but the product name matters less than whether you can inspect and reverse what it did.

Exercise

Rewrite one recurring task as both (a) a trigger/action map and (b) an agent brief. Time-box a paper trial: which version has fewer ambiguous steps? Build that one first.
